We started ONU® in April 2018. ONU® is an abbreviation of On You. Nowadays, more than 70% of garments are made from man-made fibers such as Polyester and Nylon, which are basically made from oil and are not biodegradable. As we can see, plastic bottles thrown out on one side of the ocean often travel to the other side without much damage. Needless to say, non-biodegradable materials cause a serious problem to the environment.
Natural fibers such as Wool and Cotton are just that - natural. And wool especially has been a part of human life for more than 3,000 years, protecting us in both scorching summers and freezing winters.
These days, physical practices such as Yoga are in the spotlight. Yoga is meant to synchronize ourselves with a more natural biorhythm. City dwellers in particular are mentally stressed everyday, so their minds crave something more natural.
But why then are most yoga clothes made with man-made fibers? This is what I questioned myself and is the concept behind ONU®. ONU® is almost 100% made of merino wool. Wool is a natural product made from sunshine, fresh air and water in a pure environment in the southern hemisphere. A lamb grows, grazes on grass and generates wool 6-7 times in his lifetime until he goes back to the soil, becoming nutrition to the grasses. This sustainable cycle never ends.
Wool grows on the back of sheep and it is shorn with clippers once a year, one animal at a time. In Australia, it involves 30,000 shearers travelling across the land from east to west to do so. It is tiring work but the workers love sheep and the Australian countryside, and in a way, the wool embodies the Australian nature they love.
All this led me to think, ‘why not use wool for yoga, both of which happen to have a an over 3,000 year history?’ By doing so, I thought Yogis and Yoginis would be able to achieve perfect unison with the natural biorhythm.
This is the story of how I started ONU®.
Going forward we’ll be writing more about wool`s benefits. Happy reading!
